A Sherpa from Solukhumbu skillfully saved a stranded Malaysian mountaineer in the ‘Death Zone‘ of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest). On May 18, Malaysian Mountaineer Miraculous Rescue from the Everest Death Zone was by a 30-year-old Gelje Sherpa. He rescued a Malaysian named Ravi from near the South Pole. The Tourism Department officials stated this Death Zone rescue was considered impossible and termed it a ‘Miracle’.

According to the official from the Mountaineering Section of the Tourism Department, Rescuing someone from above Camp II is extremely rare. This pure humanitarian act of Gelje is simply outstanding. Gelje rescued Ravi from the South Pole which lies at an elevation of 7,900 m. The region between 7,900 m to 8,400 m is known as South Summit Balcony and is termed a very dangerous area. As of now, in the Everest region, around 600 climbers have reached the Everest Summit with almost 3% of fatalities.

Gelje Sherpa is a resident of Taating Ghar, Solukhumbu who works as a guide for Seven Summit Treks. According to him, he was accompanying Chinese mountaineers on a climb of Mount Everest. He spotted a lone stranded person at an altitude of around 8,300 m. The individual was cold, exhausted, and unnoticed by others. Carefully, he secured the person with ropes, carabiners, and a harness. Then, successfully brought him down to Camp IV where his teammates awaited. Nima Tashi Sherpa assisted Gelje in the rescue operation.

For the rescue operation, Gelje canceled his Mt. Everest ascent with his teams. At that time, saving the life was his top priority. On social media, the video of Gelje carrying the climber on his back in complete darkness is circulating. The Malaysian mountaineer was immediately rescued from Camp III and airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter for medical treatment.

Later Gelje received a ‘Thank You for saving me’ message from the Malaysian Mountaineer. At that moment, Gelje felt a deep sense of virtue. Being a devout Buddhist, he expressed his joy by stating, ‘Rescuing someone and saving a life holds a greater virtue than engaging in rituals at any temple or monastery.’

Gelje Sherpa’s courageous deed stands as a testament to the enduring presence of humanity while spreading a powerful message of faith and harmony across the world.
