Mera Peak Base Camp Trek is an adventure journey in the Mera region that takes trekkers close to the popular trekking peak Mera. Trip Outline

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400 m), transfer to hotel
On your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, an Outdoor Himalayan Treks representative will receive you and transfer you to the hotel. Freshen up, visit the office, complete the paperwork, and meet with the Guide. Stay overnight in a hotel.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Phaplu Jeep Drive (2413 m)
A scenic Jeep Drive to Phaplu. Stay overnight in a teahouse.

Day 03: Phaplu to Khari Khola Jeep Drive (2020 m), trek to Pangom (2900 m)
Jeep drive to Khari Khola, and after that start trek to Pangom. Arrive at Pangom for an overnight stay.

Day 04: Pangom to Ramailo Danda (3270 m)
Continue the journey, and walk towards Ramailo Danda.

Day 05: Ramailo Danda to Chatra Khola (3110 m)
After breakfast, trek to Chatra Khola overnight, it takes about 5 hours.

Day 06: Chatra Khola to Kothe (4182 m)
After breakfast, trek to Kothe for overnight.

Day 07: Kothe to Thagnak (4700 m)
The day for walking from Kothe to Thagnak.

Day 08: Thagnak to Khare (4950 m)
Trek to Khare which takes about 6-7 hours

Day 09: Khare to Mera Peak Base Camp (5350 m), return to Khare (4950 m)
Today is the day of acclimatization day, get up to the highest point up to Mera Peak Base Camp (5350 m). Admire the beautiful scenery of the surroundings and relish the phenomenal views of snow-covered mountains. Return to Khare for an overnight stay.

Day 10: Khare to Kothe (4182 m)
Trek down to Kothe from Khare.

Day 11: Kothe to Panch Pokhari (4350 m)
Walk down to Panch Pokhari.

Day 12: Panch Pokhari to Khiraule Gompa (2600 m)
Resume walk down to Khiraule takes about 7-8 hours.

Day 13: Khiraule to Kathmandu Jeep Drive (1400 m)
A Jeep drive to Kathmandu takes a long way and transfers to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 14: Final Departure
After breakfast, at your comfortable time, we transfer you to the International Airport and fly back home. If you have a longer holiday, extend your holiday, and we can arrange an extra activity on your demands.

Essential Information

Accommodation:

Teahouses or Lodges are accommodation types during the Mera Peak Base Camp trek that provide basic facilities (beds, quilts, and pillows) but are comfortable to stay in. Generally, bathrooms are inside the teahouses except in the higher regions. During the peak season, room sharing must be done. Internet and phone networks are mostly stable in the lower regions. Pay an additional cost for services (Wi-Fi, laundry, hot water, and showers).

Meals:

3-course full board meals are served during the Mera Peak Base Camp trek which are healthy and hygienic. Breakfast and dinner are served from the teahouses and lunch is served at the stopovers during the trek. There are limited meal options to choose from on the menu. Please inform your food menu preference earlier if there is any.

Drinking water:

Drinking water during the Mera Peak Base Camp trek is easily available. Trekkers can buy Mineral Water, fill tap water, or boiled water at teahouses as their preference. Always carry a water bottle to minimize plastic pollution. Trekkers can also use a water purification solution or buy mineral water which costs USD 1-2 per bottle.

The transportation during the Mera Peak Base Camp trek is as scheduled in the itinerary preferred by the trekkers which is as follows:

  • Private vehicle transfer to/from the airport in Kathmandu
  • Kathmandu to Phaplu, Phaplu to Khari Khola, and Khiraule to Kathmandu by Jeep

The ideal seasons for the Mera Peak Base Camp trek are Spring (Mar-May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov) as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. The winter and rainy seasons are riskier to trek due to unstable weather and temperature, slippery trails, and limited availability of accommodation and services.

Mera Peak Base Camp trek requires four compulsory permits i.e. Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), Makalu Barun National Park, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, and Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS).

Difficulty:

Mera Peak Base Camp is a moderate-graded trek with a maximum elevation of 5,350 m. Walking daily long hours on the steep ascending and descending rough trails and gaining altitude can be challenging for trekkers. This trek is suitable for trekkers with a good level of physical fitness. Previous experience is preferable.

Fitness:

Mera Peak Base Camp trek demands trekkers to have good fitness levels. Trekkers should be physically and mentally sound to join this trek. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and acclimatization, it is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

Physical Exercises

Cardiovascular Exercises, Leg Strength Exercises, Core Strength Exercises, Upper Body Strengthening, Foot and ankle Strengthening, Flexibility and Stability Exercises, and Hiking Specific Training.

Mental Exercises

Meditation, Breathing Exercises, Stress Management, Solo Reflection, Focus and Concentration Improvement, Setting a goal, Practicing problem-solving skills, Staying Calm and Positive, Enjoying every activity, etc.

The maximum elevation during the Mera Peak Base Camp trek is 5,350 m (Mera Peak Base Camp). Altitude sickness is common above 2500 m. As the elevation gains, there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness. Thus, acclimatization rest is essential to prevent it. Take an acclimatization rest as suggested in the itinerary during the trek.

Common symptoms of Altitude Sickness 

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite, and sleep loss, and on extreme some can experience unconsciousness and hallucination.

It acts as a safety net and is essential for trekking and peak climbing. We recommend getting travel insurance from a reputed company.

  • Make sure that you are insured against cancellations, accidents, health, emergency evacuation and loss, theft of, or damage to, baggage, and personal effects.
  • In emergencies, we will arrange for a helicopter rescue, medical treatment, and aftercare for you. All these costs shall be borne by your travel insurance company.

Mera Peak Base Camp trek is difficult. Since it doesn’t involve any technicality it only requires basic equipment and gear that trekkers can hire or bring on their own.

  • Emergency Rescue Service: Should any emergency arise during your trek, we will provide prompt and professional rescue and medical services. We carry a Supplementary oxygen tank with a mask and regulator for emergencies. However, you must be already insured for such emergencies, and your insurance policy must cover helicopter evacuation. Moreover, you should provide your policy details and authorize us to deal directly with your insurance company on your behalf. Please make sure that your insurance will cover helicopter evacuation above 6000 meters.
