Cory Wallace’s remarkable achievement of Mountain biking to EBC with the FKT cycling record is truly commendable. He started his Fastest Known Time (FKT) cycling attempt in Lukla, on May 20th, after rigorous training at Chiwong Monastery. Determined to set a record, he embarked on a 63 km journey, climbing 4,000 m in challenging terrain towards Everest Base Camp. With Mount Everest as his ultimate goal, Cory’s mind and body were primed for the monumental task ahead.
Cory had been engrossed in the FKT challenge for a while, and the chance to tackle it amidst the bustling peak climbing season amplified his excitement. To avoid potential trail crowding, he strategically embarked on his journey in the middle of the night, aiming to glide through the busiest parts undisturbed by the calm embrace of darkness.
Embarking at 1:40 am, Cory began on an exhilarating ride, swiftly descending from Lukla to Phakding and passing through charming villages. Reaching Monjo and entering Sagarmatha National Park around 3 am, he felt the excitement of being in the protected domain of Mount Everest. Despite army warnings of tigers, Cory embraced the thrill of encountering wildlife, reminiscent of his experiences with Grizzly bears in Canada. He also admired Nepal’s dedication to preserving its natural treasures.
Cory began a demanding ascent to Namche Bazaar, initially having to hike with his bike. However, as the trail progressed, he was able to ride, reaching the village at daybreak and surpassing the oncoming trekkers. With the stunning Ama Dablam as a backdrop, he enjoyed a pleasant ride, eventually navigating a rocky descent to a National Park checkpoint. Mindful of safety, Cory exercised caution and chose to walk through challenging sections in the Himalayan terrain.
Cycling through the night, Cory bypassed most check posts, except for a delay near Tengboche Monastery. The climb to Tengboche involved a challenging hike-a-bike section, rewarded by a picturesque rideable stretch and the serene sunrise at the monastery. Mesmerized by the stunning scenery, Cory took time for photography, appreciating the beauty of the day. The trail from Tengboche to Pheriche showcased magnificent mountain views but grew busier with trekkers, porters, and Yaks while offering convenient water sources and teahouses. He relied on F2C Liquid nutrition in food for easy digestion throughout the cycling.
Cory lost his Inreach tracker near Pheriche but enlisted the help of a passing trekker to keep an eye out. Despite the challenges of high altitude, Cory pressed on, enjoying scenic trails near Lobuche village and enduring tough hike-a-bike sections toward base camp. Amidst crowded paths and altitude sickness concerns, the journey offered breathtaking views of the Khumbu glacier and majestic mountains.
At high altitudes, trekkers were taken aback to see Cory with his bike, causing them to freeze in surprise. Cory would kindly descend, offer a Namaste, and move around them. Engaging in selfies and conversations with curious trekkers, particularly Indians, occupied his time, but he aimed to address their inquiries later in his adventure report and upcoming video.
Reaching Everest Base Camp at 12:59 pm concluded the 11-hour and 19-minute FKT ride from Lukla. The vibrant base camp atmosphere and helicopter activity captivated him for 45 minutes before he hurried back for his flight to Kathmandu. The return journey presented manageable trails, a memorable rainstorm near Namche Bazaar, and an extra day in Kathmandu to savor the city’s experiences.
Cory believed his FKT ride to Everest Base Camp surpassed expectations, with a more rideable trail and welcoming reception. About 80% of the trail was rideable, but the challenging hike in a bike section took up significant time. The bike-to-hike time ratio is 50/50. Special thanks to the Nepal Tourism Board and trek partner for their support.
Overall, Cory’s determination and skill were put to the test as he conquered the challenging terrain, covering the distance to EBC with remarkable speed and endurance. Cory’s accomplishment stands as a testament to his exceptional athleticism and the adventure of pushing boundaries in the world of mountain biking.
