Trip Outline

Day 01: Kathmandu arrival (1400 m)
Arrive in Kathmandu, get welcomed by the representative, and transfer to the hotel.

Day 02: Trek preparation day (Optional- Kathmandu city tour)
Documentation works (Issue of Permits, Paper works), (Optional: Kathmandu city tour).

Day 03: Drive to Dhap Bazaar (2850 m)
A scenic drive to Dhap Bazaar takes about 7-8 hours.

Day 04: Trek to Jhapre (2815 m)
Trek through the forested trail with several ups and downs to arrive at Jhapre.

Day 05: Trek to Pikey Peak Base Camp (3640 m)
Pass through old yak houses, Mani Wall, and a forested trail to reach Pikey Peak Base Camp.

Day 06: Trek to Pikey Peak (4065 m), descend to Jase Bhanjyang (3520 m)
Trek to Pikey Peak and relish the sunrise view over snow-covered peaks including Everest, Thamserku, Numbur Chuli, etc. and slowly descend to Jase Bhanjyang.

Day 07: Trek to Junbesi (2700 m)
Pass through the forested trail admiring the scenery and arrive at Junbesi via Toktok.

Day 08: Trek to Phaplu (2413 m)
Traverse a steel suspension bridge and cross Beni Ghat to reach Phaplu.

Day 09: Drive to Kathmandu (1400 m)
Return to Kathmandu after completing the Pikey Peak Trek.

Day 10:  International Departure
Transfer to the airport for your departure.

Essential Information

Accommodation:

Teahouses or lodges with basic facilities are the means of accommodation during the Pikey Peak Trek. These teahouses are comfortable but must pay additional costs for facilities like Wi-Fi, laundry, hot bucket water, and charging devices. It is a good idea to book ahead during peak season for your convenience. In the higher regions, it is most likely to share rooms. Washrooms are also outside the teahouse or lodge.

Meals:

3-course full board meals are served during the Pikey Peak trek which are healthy and hygienic. Breakfast and dinner are served from the teahouses and lunch is served at the stopovers during the trek.

Drinking water:

Drinking water during the Pikey Peak trek is easily available. Trekkers can buy Mineral Water, fill tap water, or boiled water at teahouses as their preference. Always carry a water bottle to minimize plastic pollution. Travelers can also use a water purification solution or buy mineral water which costs USD 1-2 per bottle.

The transportation during the trek is as scheduled in the itinerary preferred by the travelers which is as follows:

  • Private vehicle transfer to/from the airport in Kathmandu
  • Kathmandu-Dhap Bazaar (by bus or shared private vehicle )
  • Phaplu-Kathmandu (by bus or shared private vehicle)

The ideal seasons for the Pikey Peak Trek are Spring (Mar-May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov) as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. The winter and rainy seasons are riskier to trek due to the unstable weather and temperature, slippery trails, and limited availability of accommodation and services. There is a high chance of flight cancellation during monsoon and winter. Still, it is possible to trek with proper planning and preparation.

Pikey Peak Trek requires compulsory three permits i.e. Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, and Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS).

Difficulty:

Pikey Peak is a moderate-level trek with a maximum elevation of 4,065 m.  Walking daily long hours on the steep ascending and descending rough trails and gaining altitude can be challenging for trekkers. This trek is suitable for trekkers with a medium level of physical fitness as it does not involve any technicality. Previous experience is preferable. Our support is always there throughout your journey from the start to the end.

Fitness:

Pikey Peak Trek demands trekkers to have good fitness levels. Trekkers should be physically and mentally sound to join this trek. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and acclimatization, it is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

Cardiovascular Exercises, Leg Strength Exercises, Core Strength Exercises, Upper Body Strengthening, Foot and ankle Strengthening, Flexibility and Stability Exercises, and Hiking Specific Training.

Mental Exercises

Meditation, Breathing Exercises, Stress Management, Solo Reflection, Focus and Concentration Improvement, Setting a goal, Practicing problem-solving skills, Staying Calm and Positive, Enjoying every activity, etc.

The maximum elevation during the Pikey Peak Trek is 4,065 m (Pikey Peak). Altitude sickness is common above 2500 m. As the elevation gains, there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness. Thus, acclimatization rest is essential to prevent it. Take an acclimatization rest as suggested in the itinerary during the trek.

Common symptoms of Altitude Sickness 

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite, and sleep loss, and on extreme some can experience unconsciousness and hallucination.

  • Make sure that you are insured against cancellations, accidents, health, emergency evacuation and loss, theft of, or damage to, baggage, and personal effects.
  • In emergencies, we will arrange for a helicopter rescue, medical treatment, and aftercare for you. All these costs shall be borne by your travel insurance company.

Pikey Peak trek is moderate. Thus, it only requires basic equipment and gear that trekkers can hire or bring on their own.

Moreover, you should provide your policy details and authorize us to deal directly with your insurance company on your behalf. Please make sure that your insurance will cover helicopter evacuation up to 5650 meters.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01 Kathmandu arrival

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m). 30-minute hotel drive.

Our representative from Outdoor Himalayan Treks greets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Kathmandu for a rest. In the evening, visit our office to meet our team and a guide. A short trek briefing and check the necessary trekking gear/equipment. If you arrive in Kathmandu late in the evening, we can continue this process the next day. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 02 Trek preparation day (Optional- Kathmandu city tour)

After breakfast, we do the paperwork for the Pikey Peak trek. We issue necessary trek permits and complete all the arrangements for the next day’s trek. Then, you can stroll around Kathmandu for sightseeing on your own or we can arrange a tour guide for you. The Kathmandu city tour includes famous World Heritage Sites such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. Later, in the evening visit the Thamel market and enjoy some delicious foods. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 03 Drive to Dhap Bazaar

Elevation: Dhap Bazaar (2850 m) 8 hours’ drive.

Take a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap Bazaar. Adore the surrounding scenery, changing landscapes, flowing rivers, and passing several settlements. After 7-8 hours of drive, reach Dhap for an overnight stay.

Day 04 Trek to Jhapre

Elevation: Jhapre (2815 m) 4-5 hours trek. Elevation loss: 35 m

After breakfast, commence the trek adoring the beautiful scenery. Arrive at the village of Sigane and witness the awesome view of the Numbur Himal ranges. Traversing through the forested trail with several ups and downs arrive at Jhapre.

Day 05 Trek to Pikey Peak Base Camp

Elevation: Pikey Peak Base Camp (3640 m) 5-6 hours trek. Elevation gain: 825 m

Relishing the fabulous views of the Everest ranges, follow the trail that leads to Bhulbhule. Trek slowly as the altitude rises. Pass through old yak houses, Mani Wall, and a forested trail to reach Pikey Peak Base Camp.

Day 06 Trek to Pikey Peak, descend to Jase Bhanjyang

Elevation: Pikey Peak (4065 m), Jase Bhanjyang (3520 m) 4-5 hours trek. Elevation gain/loss: 425 m/545 m

Wake up early and start the trek to Pikey Peak. Ascend slowly and after a few hours reach the top. Relish the sunrise view over snow-covered peaks including Everest, Thamserku, Numbur Chuli, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, etc. Take pictures, create memories, and spend some time over there. Slowly descend and following an ascending and descending trail, arrive at Jase Bhanjyang.

Day 07 Trek to Junbesi

Elevation: Junbesi (2700 m) 5-6 hours trek. Elevation loss: 820 m

Pass through the forested trail admiring the scenery and arrive at Toktok. Continue the trek further and arrive at Junbesi. This beautiful village is inhabited by Sherpa and Tamang ethnicities. There is also a Buddhist Stupa in the vicinity, explore it. Interact with the friendly locals and stay overnight.

Day 08 Trek to Phaplu

Elevation: Phaplu (2413 m) 5-6 hours trek. Elevation loss: 287 m

Descend through the trail and traverse a steel suspension bridge to reach Beni Ghat. Enjoying the surrounding scenic views and walking on a comfortable trail, reach Phaplu.

Day 09 Drive to Kathmandu

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 9-10 hours’ drive

Drive from Phaplu to Kathmandu with a regular sumo jeep. Upon arrival at Kathmandu, transfer to the hotel. In the evening farewell dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant with Nepali cuisine.
