Manaslu is a remote region hence the pristine nature and the unexplored beauty of this region are mesmerizing. This is the least explored trek due to its remoteness and only in the 90s this trek region was opened for exploration. Slowly, the popularity of the trek in the Manaslu region is growing. The enchanting Ponkar Lake lies on the foot of the magnificent Larkya La Pass. It is at an elevation of 4,100 m where you can relish the stunning views of Mt. Manaslu (North), Manaslu (main), Cheo, Himalchuli, Himlung, Larke Peak, etc. The beauty of this trek is it doesn’t require an additional Manaslu Restricted Area Permit and is budget-friendly. The trail route is less crowded hence within short-distance trekkers can cover an elevation above 4000 m.

Ponkar Lake trek commences with a scenic drive to Besishahar from Kathmandu. Then, drive to Tilije on a shared jeep/bus and start the trek from the beautiful settlement of Gho. The trail consists of several ups and downs yet the scenic landscapes and natural beauty of the region remain captivating. Experience the typical Nepalese rural life during this rural journey. Trek to Bimthang and from there reach the base of Larkya La Pass where the beautiful Ponkar Lake lies. From there, cherish the fabulous snow-capped Manaslu ranges. Essential Information

Accommodation:

Teahouses or Lodges are accommodation types during the Ponkar Lake trek that provide basic facilities but are comfortable to stay in. Generally, bathrooms are outside the teahouses. Pay additional costs for facilities like Wi-Fi, laundry, hot bucket water, and charging devices. In the higher regions, it is most likely to share rooms. Internet and phone networks are mostly stable in the lower areas.

Meals:

3-course full board meals are served during the Ponkar Lake trek which are healthy and hygienic. Breakfast and dinner are served from the teahouses and lunch is served at the stopovers during the trek. Since Manaslu is a Buddhist region, meat is prohibited in most of the areas.

Drinking water:

Drinking water during the Ponkar Lake trek is easily available. Trekkers can buy Mineral Water, fill tap water, or boiled water at teahouses as their preference. Always carry a water bottle to minimize plastic pollution. Travelers can also use a water purification solution or buy mineral water which costs USD 2-4 per bottle.

Public vehicles are the means of transportation during the Ponkar Lake Trek as there are no airways in this region. Private vehicle options are also there.

Ponkar Lake lies in a remote region with only limited facilities. Thus, the ideal seasons are Spring (Mar-May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov), as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. The winter and rainy seasons are riskier to trek due to unstable weather and temperature, slippery trails, and limited availability of accommodation and services. Still, it is possible to trek with proper planning and preparation.

Ponkar Lake trek is a moderate-level trek with a maximum elevation of 4,100 m. Walking daily long hours on the steep ascending and descending rough trails can be challenging for trekkers. This trek is suitable for trekkers with an average level of physical fitness as it does not involve any technicality. Previous experience is preferable. Ponkar Lake Trek demands trekkers to have good fitness levels. Trekkers should be physically and mentally sound to join this trek. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and acclimatization, it is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

The maximum elevation during the Ponkar Lake trek is 4,100 m. Altitude sickness is common above 2500 m. As the elevation gains, there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness. Thus, acclimatization rest is essential to prevent it. Take an acclimatization rest as suggested in the itinerary during the trek.

Common symptoms of Altitude Sickness 

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite, and sleep loss, and on extreme some can experience unconsciousness and hallucination.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01 Kathmandu arrival

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 30-minute hotel drive.

An Outdoor Himalayan Treks staff, waiting for you at the Tribhuvan International Airport, will meet and greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You will rest and relax for the rest of the day in the hotel.

Day 02 Trek preparation day (Optional- Kathmandu city tour)

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m)

Shortly after breakfast in the morning, you will meet your trekking team, including the trek guide, in our office. He will brief you about the trek. If you wish you will proceed on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley (Extra cost will be applied). We will cover as much of the UNESCO heritage sites that showcase the rich cultural heritage from medieval Nepal as possible during the sightseeing. We also complete all preparations for the trek during the day.

Day 03 Drive from Kathmandu to Besishahar

Elevation: Besishahar (830 m) 6-7 hours’ drive.

A long bus journey (nearly 6-7 hours) will take you to Besishahar, the point of departure for our trek. So we start from Kathmandu early in the morning at 7 o’clock. Admiring the scenery en route and relishing short rest breaks we arrive at Besishahar. Spend the night at the Local Teahouse.

Day 04 Drive to Tilije, trek to Gho

Elevation: Tilije (2515 m), Gho (2560 m) 3-4 hours’ drive, 1-2 hours trek.

Drive to Tilije traversing the beautiful settlements of Ngadi, Bhulbhule, Syange, Chamche Tal, and Dharapani. Upon reaching Tilije, commence the trek to Gho walking on an ascending and descending trail. Pass through the holy monastery, river bank, and forested pine and oak trail to enter the lovely Gho village of Gurung indigenous. Spend the night at the Local Teahouse.

Day 05 Trek to Bimthang

Elevation: Bimthang (3590 m) 4-5 hours trek.

Pass through the forested trail of oak and rhododendron on an ascending and descending trail. Get a sight of locals engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry and admire the first sight of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m). Pass through the settlements of Yak Kharka, Hampuk, and walk on a steep trail to reach Bimthang. The place is surrounded by White Mountains which enhance the region’s beauty. Spend the night at the Local Teahouse.and

Day 06 Trek to Ponkar Lake, back to Bimthang

Elevation: Ponkar Lake (4100 m), Bimthang (3590 m) 5-6 hours trek.

The trek to Ponkar Lake at the base of the magnificent Larkya La Pass is sure to amaze the trekkers. Start early with a packed lunch with you, and commence the trek to Ponkar Glacial Lake. Walk through the forested trail and then to the barren wilderness. The trail is full of several ups and downs, so walk slowly to prevent altitude sickness. The final walk on a steep trail to reach the beautiful Ponkar Lake.

Upon reaching Ponkar Lake, cherish its natural beauty. The lake is surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks such as Manaslu, Himlung, Cheo, Larke Peak, etc. Spend some time over there and enjoy your packed lunch. Create memories, take photographs, and return to Bimthang for an overnight stay at the local teahouse.

Day 07 Trek to Gho

Elevation: Gho (2560 m) 4-5 hours trek.

The return trek to Gho is enjoyable. Follow the same trail with short ascends and more descends through the forested trail, and arrive at Gho. Spend the night at the Local Teahouse.

Day 08 Trek to Tilije, drive to Besishahar

Elevation: Tilije (2515 m), Besishahar (830 m) 1-2 hours trek, 3-4 hours’ drive.

As we start to come down to lower elevations, we again see farmlands and forests. This is the case today, as we pass alpine forests of rhododendron and fig trees to reach Tilije. Drive back to Besishahar and stay overnight in the Local Teahouse.

Day 09 Drive to Kathmandu

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 6-7 hours’ drive.

After breakfast, we return to Kathmandu on a long bus journey. It takes about 7 Hours Local bus to drive. After reaching your Hotel, Outdoor Himalayan Treks offers you a Typical Nepali Live cultural show Dinner at a Typical Nepali Restaurant, or meals of your preference.
