Dhampus Peak Climbing Essential Information

Accommodation:

Teahouses or Lodges and tented camps are accommodation types during the Dhampus Peak Climbing that provide basic facilities (beds, quilts, and pillows) but are comfortable to stay in. Generally, bathrooms are inside the teahouses except in the higher regions. Tented Camping must be done for 3 nights during the peak climbing. Internet and phone networks are mostly stable in the lower regions. Pay an additional cost for services (Wi-Fi, laundry, hot water, and showers).

Meals:

3-course full board meals are served during the Dhampus Peak Climbing which are healthy and hygienic. Breakfast and dinner are served from the teahouses and lunch is served at the stopovers during the peak climbing. There are limited meal options to choose from on the menu. Professional cooks prepared meals during the tented camping. Please inform your food menu preference earlier if there is any.

Drinking water:

Drinking water during the Dhampus Peak Climbing is easily available. Climbers can buy Mineral Water, fill tap water, or boiled water at teahouses as their preference. Always carry a water bottle to minimize plastic pollution. Climbers can also use a water purification solution or buy mineral water which costs USD 1-2 per bottle. Boiled water is served during the tented camping.

The ideal seasons for Dhampus Peak Climbing are Spring (Mar-May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov) as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. The winter and rainy seasons are riskier to peak climbing due to the unstable weather and temperature, slippery trails, and limited availability of accommodation and services. However, it is possible with proper planning and preparations.

Difficulty:

Dhampus Peak Climbing is a strenuous trek with a maximum elevation of 6,012 m. Peak climbing is a demanding task but achievable with good preparations. The mountaineer with good physical condition and prior experience can easily ascend the Dhampus Peak. The trails are rough and contain steep ascend and descend, challenging for mountaineers. The best part of this peak climbing is it is not very technical. Some sections require using of equipment and gear.

Fitness:

Dhampus Peak Climbing demands climbers to have top-notch fitness levels. Climbers should be physically and mentally sound to join this peak climbing. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and acclimatization, it is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is common above an elevation of 2500 m in the mountains. As the altitude rises, oxygen level declines, and air pressure also lowers which affects the body’s functions causing altitude sickness. The maximum elevation gain during Dhampus Peak Climbing is 6,012 m. Since this is peak climbing, suffering from altitude sickness is high but with proper precautions and preparation, it is preventable.

Common symptoms of Altitude Sickness 

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite, and sleep loss, and on extreme some can experience unconsciousness and hallucination.

Dhampus Peak Climbing Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01 Kathmandu arrival

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 30-minute hotel drive.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, an Outdoor Himalayan Treks representative will welcome you and transfer you to the hotel in Thamel. After refreshments, if time permits, you can visit Kathmandu Durbar Square or Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple). Meet with your guide, discuss your plans, and receive the documents. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 02 Drive to Pokhara via tourist bus

Elevation: Pokhara (822 m) 7-8 hours’ drive.

Your trekking guide will receive you from your hotel in Kathmandu at 6:30 AM and take you to the Tourist Bus Station at Kantipath. At 7:00 AM the bus will leave for Pokhara, exiting the valley of Kathmandu at Thankot and then descending through the winding highway. During the fascinating drive, you will be allowed to make two shortstops for tea and breakfast at some convenient locations. After arriving in Pokhara at around 2:00 PM, you check in at your hotel, freshen up and have lunch. Walking along the Lakeside would be a good idea for the evening. You are advised to get some good sleep to begin trekking the next day. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 03 Fly to Jomsom, trek to Tukuche

Elevation: Jomsom (2743 m), Tukuche (2590 m) 30-minute flight, 5-6 hours trek.

After an early breakfast, we take a mountain flight to Jomsom, the windy gateway to Upper Mustang. Upon arrival, we begin our trek along the Kali Gandaki River, through a desert-like landscape with strong winds and dust. We pass the charming village of Marpha and continue to Tukuche, a former trade hub where Tibetan and Nepali merchants once exchanged goods. Along the way, you’ll see mani walls, Chortens, and stunning views of snow-capped peaks. Tukuche offers cozy Thakali homestays, four nearby Buddhist gompas, and lush apple orchards. The local distillery is known for its apple, apricot, and peach brandies, especially the popular peach brandy. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 04 Trek to First Camp

Elevation: First Camp (4000 m) 6-7 hours trek.

From Tukuche, we hike up to our campsite at around 4000 meters. Our Sherpa guides and support team will help set up the tents. We spend time here to adjust to the altitude and explore the surroundings. Sleeping under the stars with the mountains all around is a peaceful and unforgettable experience. Overnight in a tent.

Day 05 Trek to Second Camp

Elevation: Second Camp (4900 m) 6-7 hours trek.

After an early start, we make our way to the second camp at 4900m. Our trail passes through harsh alpine vegetation overlooking the spectacular views of the mountains. The gradual ascend will lead us to the second camp. We set up our tents at a good campsite and start our preparations for the further climbing the next day. Overnight in a tent.

Day 06 Trek to High Camp

Elevation: High Camp (5200 m) 5-6 hours trek.

We begin early and climb from the second camp to the high camp, gradually ascending through a mountain pass. The glacial trail is often slippery, making the climb challenging and requiring regular breaks to conserve energy. After a long day, we reach the high camp, where our Sherpa team helps set up the tents and checks all climbing gear in preparation for the summit attempt the following day. Overnight in a tent.

Day 07 Acclimatization Day

Elevation: High Camp (5200 m) 2-3 hours trek.

Spend the day participating in pre-climbing training and get knowledge on using gears and equipment properly. Acclimatize properly and prepare yourself to adjust to the surroundings. Overnight in a tent.

Day 08 Ascend to Dhampus Peak, return to High Camp

Elevation: Dhampus Peak (6012 m), High Camp (5200 m) 8-9 hours trek.

This is the most important day of the trek as we make our summit attempt on Dhampus Peak. After days of preparation and acclimatization, we begin the climb early, aiming to reach the top before midday to avoid strong afternoon winds. Guided by experienced climbers, we steadily make our way up. At the summit, we’re rewarded with breathtaking views of peaks like Dhaulagiri, Tilicho, Tukuche, Nilgiri, and the Annapurna range. After enjoying the moment and taking photos, we descend back to high camp following the same route. Overnight in a tent.

Day 09 Descend to Second Camp

Elevation: Second Camp (4900 m) 4-5 hours trek.

We continue our descent from high camp to the second camp, carefully crossing the slippery glacial pass. This section can be risky, so extra caution is needed as we make our way down. Once we reach the second camp, we set up our tents again and spend the night there.

Day 10 Descend to Tukuche

Elevation: Tukuche (2590 m) 4-5 hours trek.

After an early start, we make our way back down to Tukuche, following the same trail we used on the way up. The descent offers fresh views of the mountains, revealing a new and stunning perspective of the landscape. Once in Tukuche, we check into a teahouse for an overnight stay.

Day 11 Rest day

Elevation: Tukuche (2590 m) 1-hour trek.

After long days of treks and a successful ascend to Dhampus Peak, spend this day resting and relaxing. Free to explore the surroundings or just stay relaxing in a teahouse. Interact with friendly locals and taste delicious meals. Also, taste locally made wine prepared from fresh apples, apricots, and peaches. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 12 Drive to Tatopani

Elevation: Tatopani (1190 m) 3-4 hours’ drive.

After some rest and time to enjoy the charm of Tukuche, we drive to the village of Tatopani, which means “hot water” in Nepali. Known for its natural hot springs, Tatopani is the perfect place to unwind. Soaking in the warm waters helps soothe tired muscles after the tough climb. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 13 Drive to Pokhara

Elevation: Pokhara (822 m) 3-4 hours’ drive.

After a relaxing day, we drive back to the beautiful lake city of Pokhara. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours. Once we reach the city, we check into our hotel. In the evening, Pokhara comes alive with energy, and its lively nightlife is sure to impress you.

Day 14 Drive to Kathmandu

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 7-8 hours’ drive.

The standard scheme is to provide you with a tourist coach to Kathmandu. However, if you wish to spend some extra days by yourself in Pokhara, the return ticket can be issued for your desired date. Join the farewell dinner offered by Outdoor Himalayan Treks at an authentic Nepali restaurant where you can enjoy the live cultural show. Back to the hotel for overnight.

30-minute Airport drive.

Airport transfer will be provided on your required time, but if you intend to extend your stay in Kathmandu we will arrange the airport transfer on your required day. Safe Travels.
