Trip Overview

The tour begins with a flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot of Humla. From Humla you trudge along the ancient salt trade route between Nepal and Tibet. This route is especially a terra incognita for most of the visitors to Nepal. You will trek in Nepal half of the route in the rural and beautiful sections overlapping the Limi Valley trail. Passing through the soothing wilderness and uplifting panorama in the region lying beyond the Himalayas of Nepal. It was the region where Eric Valley’s award-winning film caravan was shoot during the early 1990s.

Once you cross Nepal and enter Tibet after passing through challenging passes, you will be driven into a comfortable vehicle. Then take you into the vicinity of Mt Kailash and Mansarovar. Again you will move on your foot around Mt Kailash and Mansarovar, taking enough time to soak up the majestic panorama and ethereal surroundings.

These places hold a revered position not just in Hinduism and Buddhism, but also in Bonpo and Jain religions. However, you need not be devout to any of these religions to enjoy the ethereal surroundings of these areas. You find that the places described as the holiest by different religions are also the most beautiful on earth. This trip requires you to be in good health and physically fit. So, we recommend a thorough physical examination before you start the trek.

Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01 Arrive in Kathmandu

As you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative of Outdoor Himalayan Treks will greet you and transfer you to your hotel.

Day 02 Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Kathmandu valley has historically remained the administrative and cultural capital of Nepal since centuries. The city has a number of temples, old, grand palaces, monasteries covered with ornate stone and woodcarvings.  A day of sightseeing only gives you a rapid overview of this wonderful heritage. If you want to know more, you should spend a few days here.

Day 03 Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

It takes about an hour to reach Nepalgunj from Kathmandu. It is a burgeoning city in the western Terai region of Nepal. From hill-surrounded Kathmandu to all plain Nepal, you will experience the difference in climate, temperature, and lifestyle.

Day 04 Fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot (2910m); and trek from Simikot to Dharapuri (2250m)

The flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot is an exciting mountain flight, offering great views of the Himalayan mountains. It takes about 45 minutes to land in Simikot, the district headquarter of one of the remotest districts of Nepal. The culture and lifestyle here bear the striking similarity to that of Tibet. Take a sumptuous lunch at Simikot and then walk to Dharapuri to spend your night there.

Day 05 Trek from Dharapuri to Salli Khola (2700m)

The hike is reasonably convenient as far as Kermi, where you can find two natural hot springs.  We walk past this village, go up through sparsely treed pine forest, reach Salli la Pass at an altitude of 2990m and go down reach Salli Khola (a small stream) to spend our night at its bank.

Day 06 Trek from Salli Khola to Muchu (3120m)

Among the highlights of today’s trek is Namkha Khyung Dzong Monastery. Trees become sparse as we gain altitude. Finally, we go across the Karnali River through a suspension bridge and reach Muchu for our night’s stopover.

Day 07 Trek from Muchu to Sipsip (4300m)

From Muchu we climb down to Tumkot, visit the Dhungkar Choezam Monastery and climb up towards Yari. We walk through the treeless Himalayan terrain, going up and up until we reach Sip Sip. En route enticing mountain views exhilarate us, relieving our tiredness.

Day 08 Trek from Sipsip to Hilsa (3720m)

The highest point of the trek is reached today at Nara La Pass(4580m). As we continue the journey downwards on the other side of the pass, enjoy the lofty panorama of the Tibetan plateau. Walking past Ranipauwa, we reach Hilsa, the border town between Nepal and China.

Day 09 Trek from Hilsa to Taklakot and and drive to Tritapuri (4560m)

We cross Nepal and reach the Tibetan border town Taklakot, also known as Purang locally. Take a stroll around the town in the afternoon, and have a look at its antique heritage. Then drive to Tritapuri in the late afternoon.

Day 10 Sightseeing of Garuda valley and drive to Darchen (4560m)

Today we make a foray into some of the enigmatic caves of Garuda valley and the ruins of some ancient city. In the evening we reach Darchen, where we spend our night at the proximity of the Holy Lake, the Manasarovar.

Day 11-14 Hiking around Mt Kailash and drive to Mansarovar

We spend four days hiking around this wonderfully beautiful mountain of the earth.  The four days gives us ample time to enjoy its grandeur from impressive angles, move through fluttering prayer flags and mysterious, myth-laden caves of its vicinity. In the last day, we drive to Mansarovar and spend our night there.

Day 15 Circumambulate Mansarovar by a Jeep

Mansarovar is another gem of nature in Tibet, another most revered religious emblem. Adherents of different religions believe taking a dip in its holy waters cleanses one of the sins committed during a hundred lives.

Day 16 Drive from Mansarovar to Saga (4600m)

Passing through some small towns on the way and across Mayum La Pass, we reach Saga.

Day 17 Drive from Saga to Zangmu (3750m)

We go across the Brahmaputra River to Nyalam, peer at the majesty of Mt Everest from Lalung La (5124m), go over another pass named Lalung La (5124m) and reach the town named Zanmu, near the border with Nepal.

Day 18 Drive from Zangmu to Kathmandu

Today we drive from Zangmu in Tibet to Kathmandu Nepal first along the spectacular gorge of the Bhote Koshi River, where one of the world’s highest bungee is built, then along some villages, and farms to Kathmandu.

Day 19 International Departure

Today you will head towards your home.
