Everest Base Camp is a wildly sought-after trekking destination in Nepal. The basic attractions of the place include walking through rivers, gorges, glaciers, glacial lakes, peaks, high passes, pristine villages, and monasteries.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1979, the areas around Everest are under protection as a national park. The park is home to a huge variety and number of rare plants and animals, the most prominent ones being the impeyan pheasant (the national bird of Nepal) and musk deer. In addition, the Everest region has numerous Sherpa villages and monasteries that still preserve their centuries-old culture. Tengboche Monastery is perhaps one of the finest examples of this legacy.
